Water reservoirs, locally known as hafirs, are extremely important in the arid Sudanese climate.  The community of Korech, located in the Western Nuba Mountains approached FAR for assistance in rehabilitating their hafir.  Used mostly for watering livestock, the Korech hafir was drying up long before the rainy season returned.  FAR supplied excavation tools to the community and hired a surveyor to help with the expansion.  Korech appointed two days a week when the whole community was to work on the excavation; those who did not contribute were fined. After several tiring months, the community decided to hire a tractor to complete the dig. Korech supplied half the money to rent the tractor and FAR agreed to pay the other half.

The hafir is now eight times the size of the original. The reservoir water now lasts the community until the end of April - a few months longer than previously - providing a continuous source of water until the rains start again.  The community will continue to improve their hafir by constructing a fence, building watering troughs, and elevating the dam walls.
