Take Action
There are many creative ways for you to take action and raise awareness about Sudan in your local community.  If you have innovative ideas please feel free to contact us so that we can share them.

Guest Speakers
Seek out people in your community who are intimately aware of the situation in Sudan. Refugees are an excellent source of information as are people who have lived and worked in Sudan.  Invite them to speak at your church, school, or community venue.  FAR staff frequently visits various countries including the UK, Canada, and the USA.  Contact us to inquire about someone speaking in your area.

Write to Your Local Government
Write or phone your local representative to find out her/his stance on issues facing Sudan. Encourage her/him to advocate for peace and development processes in Sudan.  You can also suggest that more money be allocated for overseas development and relief efforts.  If you are Canadian, you can advocate for the Canadian government to continue the Canadian International Development Association (CIDA) internship program, which sends young Canadians around the world to work in relief and development.  There has recently been talk of reducing or cancelling funding to this program.  FAR currently receives funding from CIDA for several projects in Sudan.

Support Sudanese Newcomers to your Neighbourhood
Many Sudanese families have immigrated to Canada, the USA, and Europe.  Perhaps, a Sudanese family has recently moved to your neighbourhood.  Welcome newcomers to your area by volunteering with agencies that support new immigrants and refugees or simply extend hospitality and practical help such as rides and tours.

Refugee/Internally Displaced People (IDP) Camp Simulation
Create your own refugee/IDP camp on your schoolyard or church lawn and sleep over. Use only garbage bags and tarps to create shelters and eat only a small amount of rice and beans. Use the event to raise awareness or collect pledges to donate to an organization that works with refugees and IDPs.

Film Nights
Hold a film festival featuring movies about Sudan.  Any money raised from selling popcorn and drinks could be donated to an organization like FAR that is working in Sudan.  Check your local library for relevant films.

Book Clubs
Form a book club, or read a relevant book in your existing club.  Histories and biographies are a great way to fuel discussion and raise awareness.

Support Vulnerable People from your Community
Poverty is an issue around the globe.  People are suffering right in your own community. Look for ways to give voice to needs and issues of access in your neighbourhood.  Research community development in your area and support projects financially and with your time.
